Susan has been a member of Northwind Fine Arts Gallery since 2014.
She is one of the area’s plein air painters, and also works out of her local studio.
Susan has had solo exhibits around the state and has been juried into many plein air festivals across New York. She spends most of her summers participating in these events.
She notes that “I learn so much painting on site, not only about painting, but about the history of the land. The experience is akin to capturing time on a canvas, and seeing nature in a way that is impossible with a photograph. It informs and inspires everything I do in the studio. Many people say they find my paintings peaceful. That is really rewarding.”
Her oil painting, “All Quiet” won People’s Choice award at the 2022 Tupper Arts Plein Air Festival, and her pastel, “Our Little Town,” depicting the town of Saranac Lake, won 1st place at the Adirondack Artists Guild’s 2019 Annual Juried Show. She is a juried member of the Pastel Society of America and Oil Painters of America. Susan’s work in oil and pastel have been featured in galleries across New York State and other areas in the Northeast; she has had numerous featured solo shows and has taught classes at The Wild Center and View in Old Forge.
While Susan’s formal degree is in health care, she has spent a lifetime taking workshops and classes with world-class artists. She also studied interior design while in college, and studied and painted historic forms of decorative folk art for ten years.
A lifelong dog lover, Susan lives in the Adirondacks with her husband and dog(s). Susan’s nearby studio includes Skydance Gallery, where more of her work can be seen by appointment, and much of her available work can be viewed on SusanWhitemanFineArt.com.
