Mary Woodcock Johnson is a Maine native who has lived, painted and taught art in the Adirondacks since1984.
Watercolor, acrylics and drawing are the tools of her trade but her heart belongs to oil painting. During her classes at the University of Maine and University of Wisconsin she took every opportunity to paint figures and was happiest when drawing or painting in oils.
Figures as they interact and relate to each other have always interested Mary. Their gestures create that sense of place that allows the viewer access to the painting. The tilt of a head, the closeness of two figures as they walk by a third, Winter Carnival crowds or a solitary figure walking down a dreary street are often been her subjects.
During the past year of social distancing Mary’s daily walks in the woods influenced her painting so that landscapes, flowers, trees, animals and birds are now her subjects. Flowers and animals both seen and those she hopes to see have become the focus of her work as she explores local trails.
Mary is, happily, a returning member of NorthWind Fine Arts having spent a year and a half on hiatus. Walking, walking, walking.....and happy to be back!
