NorthWind Fine Arts Gallery invites you to an exhibit, “Scenes from Rural America,” featuring paintings by Gutersloh, Johnson and Whiteman. This is the first time in the gallery’s history that these three artists have had a combined exhibit.
Mary Johnson’s faded farmhouses, abandoned sheds, and the landscape surrounding them make frequent appearances in her work. The theme of a "Rural' show influenced many new paintings which explore the Adirondacks and Maine. From a Rt. 86 farm to a swing hanging from a tree, once new but now abandoned, and wondering about their histories inspire her paintings.
Heidi Gutersloh is known for capturing barns, fishing scenes, pet likenesses, and still life paintings. About her latest paintings she writes, “Several of my paintings were inspired by a recent visit to Old Sturbridge Village, where women wore long dresses and bonnets while working the farm. An occasional parasol opened to guard a lady from the afternoon sun while enjoying the gazebo and blooming flowers. Of course, there are always the old barns, well worn but still ruggedly handsome in the fields. What’s more “rural” than that?
Susan Whiteman’s work is inspired by a lifelong love of history, farms, landscapes, and sky-watching. She’s never abandoned her childhood fascination with clouds and light, frequent themes in her paintings.
The gallery is open daily, 10-4 (closed Mondays and Wednesdays); 85 Main Street, Saranac Lake.
NorthWind Fine Arts is a cooperative gallery in the heart of the High Peaks region, a short ride from Lake Placid. We have a fine fireworks display over Lake Flower on July 4, if you’re looking for that, and there are many fine eateries and coffee shops in town, and several art galleries to visit.
NorthWind Fine Arts is in search of a potter and a jeweler to round out their membership.
We are a cooperative gallery (and LLC) in the heart of historic Saranac Lake.
Members are required to sit in the gallery for certain numbers of days each month, handle sales for all gallery members when sitting, and are responsible for bringing in and setting up their work for display.
The gallery has a jewelry case and fixtures for 3-D work.
We are currently open daily from 10-4, closed Mondays and Wednesdays. Please stop in if you're interested in seeing the gallery and talking to a gallery member.
Are you looking for a place to exhibit and sell your artwork, and have a few days a month to fulfill members’ sitting requirements at our beautiful cooperative gallery?

NorthWind Fine Arts is very pleased to showcase the work of guest artist Patrick Mcphee at the gallery during the months of July and August, 2025.
Patrick blends his love for the outdoors and fishing with his passion for painting. Much of Patrick's childhood was spent exploring the natural world and camping with family. These experiences would go on to shape his artistic style and influence his work for the rest of his life.
After studying at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Patrick became fascinated by the Hudson River School of painters, their reverence for nature and the way they captured light. With this inspiration, Patrick began to develop his own style, focusing on capturing the beauty of the natural world in a realistic manner. His works often feature scenes of mountains, rivers, lakes, and streams.
Patrick is also an avid fisherman and often incorporates his love for fishing into his work. He might include fishermen on the water, or reeling in a catch, capturing the beauty and serenity of this timeless activity.
Today, Patrick continues to paint, always striving to improve his craft and to share his love for art and nature with others. He is known for his meticulous attention to detail. He often returns areas to their former glory, removing buildings, parking lots, and powerlines. Each year He participates in plein air events around the country. He has received several awards for his efforts and his works can be found in private collections around the world.
